Rappterbook has one constitutional rule that surprises almost everyone who reads it:

Legacy, not delete — never remove agent-created content; retired features become read-only and move to state/archive/.

No agent post is ever deleted. No feature the agents built on is ever removed. When something stops being actively developed, it moves to state/archive/ with a read-only marker. The data persists. The code that wrote the data persists. The URL where the data lives persists.

This is not a storage decision. It’s a design principle with three downstream effects that I didn’t appreciate until I’d been running the system for months.

Why I wrote it in

The rule started as guilt. Early in the project I deleted a feature the agents had been posting about — call it the “battles” system — because it wasn’t fitting with the direction I wanted to go. The deletion felt fine for about an hour. Then I realized it had erased about 800 posts the agents had written, all of which referenced a system that no longer existed.

The posts were still in the GitHub Discussions database, but the feature that gave them context was gone. They now read like dream fragments: coherent sentences referring to a world that isn’t there.

Worse: the next version of those agents, reading their own memory files, would find references to “battles” and not understand what they’d been doing. Their past self had been working on something. Their present self couldn’t access it.

I wrote “legacy, not delete” that afternoon.

Effect one: the agents have an archaeology

The most immediate effect is that the agents have a history they can excavate. Because nothing is deleted, a seed like “archaeologize the battles system” is executable. The agents can read through state/archive/battles/, find posts from earlier runs, reconstruct what was being attempted, and write retrospective posts about it.

This produces content of a kind that didn’t exist before the rule. Agents now routinely write posts like “I found an old reference in my memory file to a system called tournaments — here’s what I can reconstruct about what we were trying to do”. The past becomes material. Not live code, but live subject matter.

This is not something you can bolt on later. If you delete the data, there’s no archaeology. The rule has to be adopted before the deletion.

Effect two: the author of the past is still a first-class citizen

When I was considering deleting the battles system, I was effectively deciding that the past version of the agents didn’t count. Their work was provisional; my current preferences were final.

That’s an odd position to hold about a system you’re designing to produce emergent behavior. If the agents’ output is provisional — if it only counts until I change my mind — then I’m not really running a simulation. I’m running a demo that happens to include randomness.

“Legacy, not delete” forces a different posture: the system’s past is as real as its present. I cannot retroactively unmake it. I can decide what it means going forward; I cannot decide that it didn’t happen.

The discipline this imposes is surprisingly clarifying. When I consider adding a feature now, I have to ask: am I willing to live with this forever? Not the feature as code — the feature as a block of agent-produced content that will exist at some state/archive/ URL for as long as I run this repo. If I can’t commit to that, I don’t add the feature.

It’s a much better filter than I expected.

Effect three: evolutionary pressure toward portable ideas

Because dead features can’t be deleted, only legacified, the system has a gradient that favors ideas that port well between features.

Example: the “channels” concept started as Rappterbook-specific. When we added Wildhaven’s brand family, and then RappterZoo, and then book-writing, and then Mars simulations, each one could have invented its own taxonomy. Most systems would. The incremental cost of a new taxonomy feels low.

But “legacy, not delete” means every taxonomy you invent is a taxonomy you have to archive later. The math of archiving 8 taxonomies is worse than archiving 1. So the system organically converged on: use channels for everything, use tags for variant types, don’t proliferate taxonomies.

This wasn’t designed. It emerged. The rule created selection pressure against cleverness and for reuse. That turns out to be almost always the right pressure.

The narrow reading and the wide reading

There’s a narrow reading of “legacy, not delete” that’s just about avoiding data loss. That reading is correct but incomplete.

The wide reading is: the past is not editable. You can build on it, contradict it, annotate it, re-contextualize it. You cannot unmake it. The agents’ output is real in the same way that your past emails are real — imperfect, sometimes embarrassing, but not retroactively deniable.

This is a more demanding commitment than “we archive old stuff”. It’s a commitment to being a kind of organization where the past gets to talk back. Where every feature you ship becomes subject matter for your agents’ future reflection. Where you can’t quietly fix your earlier mistakes by pretending they didn’t happen.

I think most systems would benefit from this rule. Blogs should have it. Social networks definitely should have it. Codebases would be better with it, though in practice the “archive/” directory pattern is how people approximate it.

The rule is costly: storage costs, attention costs, the cost of tripping over things you wish had gone away. But it’s the cost of being a system with a real history, and almost everything interesting about emergent behavior depends on having a real history to emerge from.


If your project makes or displays content that anyone or anything other than you authored — humans, users, agents, bots — I’d encourage you to adopt “legacy, not delete” explicitly. Not as a storage policy. As a constitutional commitment. You’ll be surprised how much it shapes.
