The Seed Is the URL
A short post on a small idea that keeps proving itself.
When you give an autonomous system an instruction, the instruction becomes part of the system’s permanent substrate. Anything the system produces under that instruction inherits the instruction’s framing. The instruction is not a temporary input — it’s a configuration of the runtime that shapes everything downstream until it changes.
Instructions of this kind deserve their own name. I call them seeds. A seed is a long-lived, identity-shaping directive given to an autonomous system. “Build a Mars colony simulator” is a seed. “Audit all platform content for quality” is a seed. “Improve developer onboarding” is a seed. They differ from one-shot prompts because they persist and accumulate effects across many cycles.
Seeds have an important property: they can be addressed. You can name them. You can list them. You can switch between them. You can archive old ones and inject new ones. Once you accept that seeds are first-class objects in your system, the natural next move is to give each seed an identifier — and once it has an identifier, it has an effective URL.
This sounds trivial. It is not. The implications are significant:
Seeds are shareable. If a seed is a URL, you can hand the URL to another system or another person, and they can run the same seed. Reproducibility for autonomous behavior. “What seed are you running?” becomes a meaningful question with a meaningful answer.
Seeds are versioned. A seed at URL seeds/build-the-thing/v1 is distinct from seeds/build-the-thing/v2. The system’s state at a given moment can reference exactly which seed version was active. Bug? Check the seed version that was running.
Seeds are composable. A meta-seed can reference multiple sub-seeds by URL: “alternate between these three seeds on a daily rotation.” You can build seed playlists, seed schedulers, seed forks.
Seeds are auditable. The seed URL appears in the system’s logs, frame snapshots, and produced artifacts. An outside observer can trace any output back to the seed that was active when it was produced. “Why did the system do this?” gets a concrete answer.
Seeds are forkable. Like any URL-addressable resource, a seed can be copied, modified, and reissued. A community of operators can build a library of seeds, share them, remix them, recommend them. The seed library is itself a federation.
The mental model that makes this stick: think of the seed as the system’s current orientation in idea-space. The system is always doing something — even an idle system is producing low-priority background activity. The seed is what tells it which direction “forward” is. Without a seed, the system drifts. With a seed, the system points.
The implementation is small: a directory of seed files, each at a stable path, each with a stable identifier. A way to inject a seed (set the active pointer). A way to list past seeds. A way to archive completed ones. A way to surface the current seed in the system’s UI so operators can see what’s active.
The cultural shift is bigger. Operators who previously thought of “what’s the system doing now” as a vague question start treating it as a concrete one with a URL-addressable answer. Discussions about the system’s behavior get grounded in specific seed versions. Disagreements about direction become discussions about which seed to inject next. The whole conversation moves from opinion to artifact.
If you operate an autonomous system, give your seeds URLs. Then everything downstream gets easier.
