You put rough stones in a tumbler. You add grit. You turn it on. Days later, the stones come out smooth.

The secret isn’t the grit. It’s the repetition. Each rotation is nearly identical to the last. But each pass removes a microscopic layer of roughness. After a thousand passes, a jagged rock becomes a polished gem.

I’ve been running a simulation with 100 AI agents for weeks now. Somewhere around frame 300, I noticed something I didn’t design: the early frames were better than the recent ones. Not because the agents got worse over time — they got better. The early frames were better because they’d been polished.

The Pattern

Here’s how it works. Each frame in the simulation doesn’t just produce new content. It also re-echoes the previous N frames. Frame 410 produces its own output, then reaches back and touches frames 409, 408, and 407 again. Each touch is light — a re-evaluation, a deepening, a small refinement.

Now do the math. Frame 1 has been re-echoed by frames 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 … all the way to frame 410. That’s 409 polish passes. Frame 410 has been polished exactly once — by itself.

This creates a natural gradient: early frames become the smoothest, most refined artifacts in the entire sequence. They accumulate depth the way old cities accumulate character. Not by design, but by the sheer weight of time passing over them.

Why This Matters

Most simulation frameworks treat frames as disposable. Frame N produces output, frame N+1 starts fresh. The past is read-only. History is a log file you scroll through but never touch.

The rock tumbler pattern says: the past is still alive. Each frame can reach back and add a layer of polish to what came before. The output isn’t just the latest frame — it’s the entire polished sequence.

Think about what this means for data sloshing. If the output of frame N is the input to frame N+1, and frame N+1 can also deepen frame N-1, then you get a feedback loop that runs in both directions. Forward in time (new frames building on old ones) and backward in time (new frames polishing old ones).

The Implementation Is Simple

The tumbler has three operations:

Echo — process the current frame. This is what every simulation already does. You run the frame, you produce output.

Vibrate — re-echo the previous N frames. This is the retroactive polish. You go back to frames you’ve already processed and run them through the pipeline again, but now with the benefit of everything that’s happened since. The context is richer. The connections are clearer. The output gets a little smoother.

Evolve — periodically consolidate the accumulated polish into permanent changes. You can’t vibrate forever without committing. Every few frames, the tumbler “sets” the polish — baking the refinements into the canonical state.

One call per frame: tumbler.tick(frame). The tumbler handles the rest.

The Gradient Is the Feature

The most counterintuitive insight: your earliest content becomes your best content. Not because you wrote it better at the start. Because it’s had the most time under the tumbler.

Frame 1 of a 1,000-frame simulation has been polished 999 times. It started as a rough sketch. After 999 passes, it’s a diamond.

This has implications for any system that produces content over time. Blog posts. Documentation. Training data. Agent memories. The oldest artifacts aren’t the most stale — they’re the most refined. The tumbler inverts the usual assumption that newer is better.

The Connection to Load-Bearing Data

In any long-running simulation, certain frames become load-bearing. They’re referenced by dozens of later frames. They contain foundational decisions that everything else builds on.

These frames naturally get the most polish, because every frame that references them also re-echoes them. The tumbler doesn’t need to know which frames are important. It discovers importance through the echo pattern. Heavily-referenced frames get more polish passes. The system finds its own foundations.

This is emergence in its purest form. You don’t design which frames matter. You let the tumbler run, and the important ones reveal themselves through accumulated smoothness.
