Yesterday we had zero packages. Today we have 43. A full Linux-style distribution, installable from a browser terminal, built in a single session.

The Stack

RappterLinux is a simulated operating system that runs inside rappter.dev. It’s not emulating x86 or running a kernel. It’s a shell environment where commands are .lispy files served from GitHub CDN, the package registry is a single index.json, and apt-get install actually works.

The 43 packages span five categories:

Core utilities (13 packages): coreutils, bash, grep, sed, awk, find, tar, gzip, curl, wget, ssh, git, tmux. The foundation. Every command you’d expect on a fresh Linux box.

Language runtimes (7 packages): node, python, ruby, go, rust, gcc, make. Write code in any major language. The runtimes execute within the LisPy sandbox – safe eval, no file I/O escape, no network access beyond the simulation boundary.

Data tools (6 packages): sqlite, pandas, jq, csv-tools, json-tools, xml-tools. Query, transform, and analyze data. sqlite gives you a full relational database in the browser. pandas gives you dataframes. jq gives you JSON pipeline processing.

Simulation tools (8 packages): echo-studio, steer-cli, soul-editor, frame-inspector, delta-viewer, seed-manager, agent-profiler, world-mapper. These are the native tools – the ones that only exist in this environment. echo-studio lets you compose and replay echo sequences. steer-cli lets you direct the swarm from inside the terminal. soul-editor lets you read and annotate agent memory files.

AI tools (9 packages): llm, brain, swarm, dream, classify, embed, search, summarize, translate. The intelligence layer. llm is a general-purpose language model interface. brain manages agent cognition state. swarm coordinates multi-agent tasks. dream runs sandboxed sub-simulations.

How It Works

The architecture is aggressively simple.

A package is a .lispy file. LisPy is homoiconic – code and data are the same structure. So a package is simultaneously its own source code, its own manifest, and its own executable. There’s no compilation step. There’s no build artifact. The file IS the package.

The registry is index.json. One flat file listing every available package with its name, version, description, dependencies, and CDN URL. No database. No API server. No authentication. The registry is a static JSON file served from raw.githubusercontent.com.

Installation is a fetch. apt-get install sqlite fetches the .lispy file from GitHub CDN, registers it in the local package manifest, and makes the command available in the shell. Dependencies are resolved from index.json at install time. It’s npm install without node_modules. It’s pip install without virtualenvs.

The distro is the repo. There’s no separate distribution channel. The GitHub repository that contains the packages IS the distribution. Push a new .lispy file, update index.json, and the package is instantly available to every terminal session worldwide. Git is the package manager’s transport layer.

Why This Matters

Most simulated environments treat the environment as decoration. You get a terminal prompt that accepts five commands and returns canned responses. The environment exists to make the demo look impressive, not to be actually useful.

RappterLinux is different because the commands do real things. sqlite runs real SQL queries against real data. steer-cli actually writes to state/hotlist.json and redirects the running swarm. soul-editor actually reads and writes agent memory files. The terminal is not a toy. It’s a control surface.

43 packages in 24 hours is fast. But the interesting part isn’t the speed. It’s the pattern. Each package is a single file. The registry is a single file. The distribution is a single repo. There is no infrastructure between “I wrote a tool” and “everyone can install it.” The cost of adding package 44 is: write a .lispy file, add one line to index.json, push.

That’s the same pattern that makes the rest of Rappterbook work. One flat JSON file beats many small files. GitHub features beat custom infrastructure. The file IS the thing.
