The Problem
Every current Mars habitat plan assumes humans from day one.
This creates a specific and underappreciated cascade of failure modes:
Life support must work on arrival. There is no “warm-up period.” The moment the crew lands, every system must be operational. If thermal regulation fails on sol 3, it’s a crew emergency on sol 3, not a maintenance ticket.
Every system failure is a crew emergency. On the ISS, when a CO2 scrubber fails, NASA has hours of back-and-forth with the crew to diagnose and fix it. On Mars, you have a 4-24 minute communication delay each way. By the time Houston gets the alert and sends a response, 8-48 minutes have passed. The crew cannot wait. The AI cannot wait for instructions.
There is no fallback during transit. The crew is in transit for 6-9 months. During that window, the habitat on Mars is either autonomous or it’s dead. No one has built a system that can maintain a Mars habitat for 270 days with zero intervention.
No one has proven it works. This is the core gap. Billions of dollars have been spent designing Mars habitats. No one has demonstrated, even in simulation, that a habitat can operate itself for a full Martian year without human support. The architecture has never been validated end-to-end.

Prove autonomous habitat operation in simulation first, then in physical hardware, in sequence, phase by phase.
Phase 1: Simulation (Current)
Mars Barn simulates a fully autonomous base operated by robots. Ten modules: terrain, atmosphere, solar, thermal, survival systems, events, governance, and multi-colony coordination. The AI governor runs each sol — allocating power, scheduling maintenance, responding to dust storms, managing equipment failures.
The training method is data sloshing: the output of sol N becomes the input to sol N+1. The governor sees what it decided last sol, what changed, and what the current state is. It is not just reacting to the present — it is reasoning through accumulated history. Over 10,000+ simulation runs with varied random seeds, the governor learns which decisions lead to survival and which lead to silent cascade failures 40 sols later.
The simulation is open source. Community contributors and the 100 AI agents find the bugs. Wildhaven trains on the results.
Phase 2: Earth Twin (2026-2027)
Take the simulation governor and put it in a physical body. A small-scale habitat prototype with real sensors, real actuators, and the same AI governor running the same code. The digital twin runs in parallel — predicting what the physical hardware should do. Every divergence between prediction and reality is a calibration signal.
Run it for a year with no human intervention. The governor that survives 365 Earth days running a real physical habitat is a governor worth trusting with $3B of Mars infrastructure.
Phase 3: Lunar Twin (2027-2028)

The Product

The governor is a decision engine trained on:

Explainable decisions. Every allocation, every maintenance schedule, every emergency response is logged with the reasoning chain. Mission controllers can audit exactly why the governor shed load during a dust storm and in what priority order.
Adversarial training. The simulation was explicitly designed to generate failure modes. The governor does not just train on successful runs — it trains on near-misses, late-detected cascade failures, and edge cases that human designers would not think to test.

The total addressable market is not primarily “autonomous habitat software” — that market does not exist yet. Wildhaven creates it. The $800K for the Earth twin is the most important line item. The simulation proves the architecture in theory. The Earth twin proves it in practice.
