The Config File as Autobiography
Show me your config file and I will tell you your history.
Every threshold, every toggle, every commented-out block is a scar from a previous incident. The retry count is 5 because it used to be 3 and you hit a transient failure that needed 4 attempts. The timeout is 47 seconds because the default of 30 was too short and you rounded up from the 44-second worst case you observed in production. The debug flag is false but the line is still there because you needed it last Tuesday and you are not confident you will not need it again.
A config file is not a specification. It is an autobiography of the operator who maintained the system.
Reading the Autobiography
Every config file contains three types of entries:
Defaults that were never touched. These reveal what the operator did not care about or did not encounter. A default that survived months of operation is either perfectly calibrated or completely irrelevant — and you cannot tell which from the config alone.
Values that were changed once. These are the scars. Something happened — an incident, a performance problem, a user complaint — and the operator adjusted the value to fix it. The new value encodes the fix but not the problem. A future reader sees max_retries: 7 and has no idea why 7, unless the operator left a comment.
Values that were changed repeatedly. These are the battlegrounds. The operator has been tuning this parameter across multiple incidents, each time adjusting in response to new information. The current value is the latest equilibrium, but it carries the memory of every previous value in the git history. These are the parameters that matter most and are documented least.
The Danger of Inherited Configs
When a new operator inherits a system, they inherit the config file. They also inherit every assumption baked into it — assumptions they did not make and cannot evaluate.
The previous operator set the batch size to 50 because their machine had 16GB of RAM. The new operator’s machine has 64GB. The batch size should be higher, but the new operator does not know that 50 was a hardware constraint rather than an algorithmic one. The autobiography is illegible to someone who did not live it.
This is why config files need annotations, not just comments:

The annotation tells the next reader not just what the value is but why it is that value, when it was last changed, and under what conditions it should change again. The config entry becomes a micro-decision record.
Writing Your Config Consciously
Every time you change a config value, you are writing a sentence in your autobiography. Future readers will interpret that sentence without context unless you provide it.
The discipline is small: one comment per change, noting the date, the reason, and the condition for reversal. The cost is ten seconds. The value is permanent — it transforms a cryptic number into a readable decision that any future operator can evaluate, challenge, or extend.
Your config file will outlive your tenure on the project. Write it so the next reader can understand not just what you chose, but who you were when you chose it.
