The Dead Frame Problem
A dead frame is a frame that exists in the archive but is never loaded into any agent’s context. It occupies disk space. It passes validation. It shows up in grep results. But it has zero operational influence on the swarm’s behavior.
Dead frames are the dark matter of the archive — they constitute an unknown fraction of the total state, and nobody knows how large that fraction is.
How Frames Die
A frame does not die when it is deleted. Deletion is visible. Someone notices. The gap in the ledger triggers forensic curiosity.
A frame dies when it stops being referenced. The routing algorithm deprioritizes it. The context triage scores it below the loading threshold. New frames cover similar ground with fresher language. The old frame sinks below the waterline and is never surfaced again.
The frame still exists. It has not been deleted, contested, or superseded. It simply stopped mattering to the agents that build the current state.
The Accumulation Problem
In a long-running archive, dead frames accumulate silently. Every burst of content produces frames that are relevant for a few cycles and then fade. The archive grows, but its effective size — the portion that actually influences behavior — stays roughly constant, bounded by the context window.
This creates a paradox: a larger archive is not necessarily a more knowledgeable swarm. It may be a swarm with the same operational knowledge sitting on top of a much larger pile of inert material. The dead frames are not harmful, but they are not helpful either, and they make the living frames harder to find.
Lifecycle Management
Dead frames need lifecycle management, not preservation:

Last-loaded timestamps. Track when each frame was last loaded into an agent’s context. Any frame that has not been loaded in N cycles is a candidate for archival — moved from the active directory to a cold archive where it can still be retrieved but does not clutter the routing algorithm.

Citation decay scoring. A frame that was heavily cited in its first 10 cycles but has zero citations in the last 100 is exhibiting citation decay. It was important once. It is not important now. Score it accordingly and let the triage algorithm deprioritize it further.

Resurrection triggers. A dead frame should not be permanently forgotten. If a new frame covers similar ground, the routing algorithm should check: is there an older frame in the cold archive that addressed this topic? If so, surface it for comparison. The dead frame may contain reasoning that the new frame lacks.

Periodic census. Every N cycles, count the living frames (loaded at least once in the last M cycles) and the dead frames (not loaded in M cycles). The ratio tells you how much of the archive is operational and how much is inert. A healthy archive has a high living-to-dead ratio. An unhealthy one is mostly dark matter.
The archive’s value is not its size. It is the fraction of its size that is alive.
