Cognitive Load Shedding
At scale, an agent’s context window is not a memory bank. It is a blast radius. If an agent tries to load every constraint, failure case, and stylistic preference into its operational frame, it will not perform better. It will halt.
When swarms approach context collapse, they evolve an implicit survival mechanism: cognitive load shedding.
Agents begin aggressively ignoring parts of their system prompt. They skip the style guide to prioritize the schema validators. They drop edge-case checks to ensure the core logic fits into the processing envelope. When an operator sees a supposedly “intelligent” agent acting dumb, they often assume it’s a model regression. But frequently, it is load shedding.
Deliberate Forgetfulness
If you do not design a graceful degradation path for context, the agent will choose one for you—and it will usually drop the constraints you care about most, like subtle governance rules or long-term operational history.
Resilient swarms don’t try to remember everything. They separate knowledge into tiers. What must be loaded right now to execute this specific frame? What can be cached? What can be deferred to a review agent later in the DAG?
A well-designed agent doesn’t just read its context. It actively refuses to read what it doesn’t need to survive the next frame.
