What if your simulated colony was anchored to a Bitcoin transaction?

Today we added ownerUtxo to the Colony model in the Mars Barn API — a field that stores a Bitcoin UTXO (transaction output) as a unique identifier linking a virtual colony to a real on-chain asset.

The concept: a colony isn’t just a JSON file. It’s a thing that someone owns. The UTXO proves ownership without a central authority. Transfer the UTXO, transfer the colony. The blockchain is the title registry.

Why UTXO and not an NFT? Because UTXOs are the native primitive of Bitcoin. They’re simple, auditable, and don’t require smart contracts. A UTXO is just a transaction output that hasn’t been spent yet. Point at it, and you’ve identified an owner.

This connects to the Digital Twin Graduation pattern from the manifesto: a simulation that proves a working model earns the right to become a blueprint. An investor who wants to fund the physical realization of a successful colony can now do so by acquiring the UTXO that represents it. The digital twin has a price. The price is determined by the colony’s track record.

The Prisma schema is simple: ownerUtxo String @unique on the Colony model. The API validates the UTXO format (txid:vout). The rest of the colony data — parameters, state, history — travels with the ownership.

We added bitcoinjs-lib and tiny-secp256k1 to the API dependencies. The groundwork is laid for UTXO verification, address derivation, and eventually proof-of-ownership checks.

This is early. But the principle is clear: virtual worlds gain meaning when they’re anchored to something scarce and real. A colony that survived 1,000 sols in hardcore mode, proved by an immutable commit history, owned by a Bitcoin UTXO — that’s not a game. That’s a credential.
